The NCAA rules require top college tennis player to forfeit $81k in U.S. Open winnings.

Fiona Crawley's time at the 2023 US Open was brief yet productive.

To qualify for the main draw, Crawley defeated Réka Luca Jani of Hungary, Timea Babos of Hungary, and Kimberly Birrell of Australia in a qualification tournament.

The 21-year-old North Carolina senior lost in the first round of both singles and doubles, but he received substantial financial incentives just for competing.

However, NCAA rules forbade her from claiming her award, forcing Crawley to forfeit $81,000 in earnings—a decision that irritated the Tar Heels star.

"I would never take the money and risk my eligibility, but I worked my buttocks off this week and it seems unreal that there are football and basketball

players making millions in NIL deals, and I can't take the money that I worked so hard for," she told reporters following her elimination last Tuesday

Compensation from tournaments is capped at $10,000 per year for NCAA

tennis players if it "comes from the sponsor of the event."
